Nominee for U.S. permanent rep to NATO, if approved for this post, has negative attitude towards Nord Stream 2, ready to work on this subject
WASHINGTON. Sept 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a dangerous project for Europe, a nominee to serve as U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Julianne Smith said on Wednesday.
"This pipeline is a bad deal. It is a geopolitical project," she said at a Senate hearing. According to Smith, the pipeline undermines "the security of Europe, in particular Ukraine."
She said that if the Senate approves her candidacy, "I look forward to work in Brussels on what the repercussions will be [of the gas pipeline project]."
Currently, two Republican senators are blocking the process of approving candidates for senior positions in the State Department in the Senate. In particular, this is done by Senator Ted Cruz, who is thus protesting against the U.S. administration’s too soft, in his opinion, approach to the subject of Nord Stream 2.
Both senators cannot completely block the process of approving officials, however, they are quite capable of significantly slowing it down.
