New Georgian ambassador in Kyiv discusses Saakashvili's detention at Ukrainian Foreign Ministry
TBILISI. Oct 4 (Interfax) – Following the first meeting in the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry on Monday, new Georgian Ambassador to Ukraine Giorgi Zakarashvili has said that many areas of bilateral cooperation have been discussed.
"The conversation was about [former Georgian President Mikheil] Saakashvili, who is imprisoned in a Rustavi prison. The Ukrainian side expressed gratitude for allowing the Ukrainian consul to visit him in jail. I assured them that the Georgian side will ensure compliance with all international regulations regarding Saakashvili," the ambassador in Kyiv told Georgia’s Imedi television.
"There was no talk at all about Saakashvili’s extradition. As for the statement of the Ukrainian president, who expressed concern by the detention of the Ukrainian citizen, it is quite natural and understandable," Zakarashvili said.
He expressed confidence that there will be no disagreements in strategic partnership between Georgia and Ukraine.
Saakashvili was detained in Tbilisi on October 1. He is currently being held in a Rustavi prison. Georgia has convicted or treated him as a suspect in several criminal cases. Georgian authorities had warned repeatedly that he would be detained immediately once over the border.
