Nearly 70% of Moldovans favor integration with EU – poll
CHISINAU. Oct 29 (Interfax) – Some 69.5% of Moldovan citizens now support Moldova becoming a part of the European Union, as compared to 71.6% in July, according to an opinion poll presented by the iData company in Chisinau on Friday.
"According to the poll results, 69.5% of the respondents would like Moldova to join the European Union, while 42.4% prefer the Eurasian Economic Union. Moldova-Romania unification is supported by 43.8% of the respondents, and 32.3% speak in favor of Moldova’s entry into NATO," research center head Mihai Bologan said.
At the end of July, Moldova’s integration with the Eurasian Economic Union was supported by 37.5% of respondents, 41.2% wanted Moldova to unite with Romania, and 27.7% called for accession to NATO.
According to Bologan, only 18.6% of the respondents support recognition of independent Transdniestria, compared to 25.3% in July. Another 40.2% (compared to 48.1% in July) would like Moldova to withdraw from the Commonwealth of Independent States, and 23.2% would like the Soviet Union to be reinstated (20.4% in July).
In the opinion of 42.2% of the respondents, Moldova is headed in the right direction (compared to 52.4% in July), while 40.9% disagree.
As to the approval ratings of politicians, President Maia Sandu leads with 36.4% (compared to 38.9% in July). Following Sandu are leader of the Moldovan Socialist Party Igor Dodon (16% compared to 20.3% in July), Shor party leader Ilan Shor (4.4% compared to 5.7% in July), and Moldovan Communist Party leader Vladimir Voronin (4.1%). Some 21% of respondents said they did not trust any politician, Bologan said.
"In the event of hypothetical early parliamentary elections next Sunday, the ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) and the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists (BCS) would win with 35.2% and 18.8% of the votes, respectively. Another 4.6% would vote for the Shor party, 3.9% for Our Party, and 2.9% for Platforma DA," the pollster said.
The pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity won the parliamentary elections on July 11, 2021, with 52.8% of the vote, while the Bloc of Communists and Socialists garnered 27.3% of the vote.
The company iData polled 834 respondents in 80 populated localities across Moldova, except Transdniestria, on October 3-18.
