NBU sees no threats to functioning of Ukrainian Alfa-Bank

KYIV. Aug 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Alfa-Bank (Kyiv) has sufficient liquidity and operates without serious disruptions, it is important for us in the market and the National Bank of Ukraine that this systemically important bank function today without adding new stresses to the financial system, First Deputy Governor of the NBU Kateryna Rozhkova said.

"We do not see any threats to the functioning of Alfa-Bank," she said on Ukrainian Radio on Monday.

Rozhkova noted that today the shareholders of Alfa-Bank are under sanctions, the National Bank took away their right to vote at a general meeting of shareholders, the bank itself operates under serious restrictions that prevent the use of the Ukrainian banking system in the interests of the aggressor country.

She stressed that Alfa-Bank belongs to the group of the largest banks, in which significant volumes of deposits of the population, balances of accounts of enterprises and businesses are concentrated, and also owns a significant share of the banking infrastructure – ATMs, terminals, branches.

"And during a full-scale war, it is very important that the banking infrastructure is available, that there is a lot of it, so that people can get services without problems," Rozhkova said, urging not to escalate the situation and not spread fakes.

At the same time, she recalled that two banks in which the Russian Federation was a direct shareholder – the subsidiaries of Sberbank and VEB – were withdrawn from the market and, in fact, liquidated on February 24.

Alfa-Bank, according to the NBU, as of June 1, 2022, ranked sixth in terms of total assets (UAH 107.35 billion) among 69 banks operating in the country. In May, its assets decreased by UAH 5.22 billion compared to UAH 2.19 billion in April.
