NBU expects official statements from IMF on new formats of work with Ukraine in near future
KYIV. Sept 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukraine continues to count on a new program of cooperation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), holds appropriate active consultations with the fund and expects its official announcements on new formats of work in the near future, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Serhiy Nikolaychuk said.
"We know that there are lively discussions within the fund about which format of the program is now most suitable for Ukraine, given its current situation. There are also discussions about changing the tools that the IMF uses to support countries," Nikolaychuk said at a regulator’s briefing on Thursday.
"We hope that, based on the results of these discussions, there will soon be official reports on the formats of support from the IMF for Ukraine in these conditions," the banker added.
He stressed that the IMF does not have a ban on lending to countries that are at war.
According to Nikolaychuk, the new program should be aimed at covering the gap in Ukraine’s balance of payments, ensuring macro-stability and structural reforms on Ukraine’s path to EU membership.
As reported, in early August, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal appealed to the IMF with a call to intensify joint work on a new cooperation program. Earlier, the head of the National Bank specified that Ukraine was counting on a new cooperation program with the IMF in the amount of $15-20 billion.
