National Police chief on attempt versions: Shefir's state activity, pressure on top officials, destabilization in country, incl with possible participation of foreign special services

KYIV. Sept 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Law enforcement officers are currently considering three main versions of the attempt on the life of first assistant to the President of Ukraine Serhiy Shefir, as a result of which his driver was wounded, Chief of the National Police of Ukraine Ihor Klymenko.

"Taking into account the receipt of preliminary data, the three main versions that the National Police of Ukraine are considering are in connection with the state activities of the victim, in order to put pressure on the top officials of the country, and in order to destabilize the political situation in our country, including a version with the participation of foreign special services," Klymenko said at a briefing at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine on Wednesday.

He said the case is under control.

In turn, Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky said the goal was not to scare, but to kill the first assistant to the President of Ukraine.

"The president’s team should not be scared, the reforms that have started, including in the fight against organized crime, will be continued," he said.

Shefir said at a briefing at the Interior Ministry the attempt on his life was carried out with the aim of intimidating the top government officials.
