National Immunization Technical Advisory Group not to recommend shortening interval between injection of COVID doses of AstraZeneca vaccine – Lapiy
KYIV. Aug 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The National Immunization Technical Advisory Group will not recommend the Ministry of Health reducing the interval between the injection of the first two COVID vaccines AstraZeneca, Head of National Immunization Technical Advisory Group Fedir Lapiy said.
"We have analyzed the data and our recommendation for the Ministry of Health for today is as follows: do not shorten the intervals, observe the possible intervals as much as possible," he said in an exclusive interview with the Interfax-Ukraine agency.
According to Lapiy, such a recommendation is based primarily on the lack of data that "if we reduce the interval, this will increase the effectiveness of the vaccine," and becomes especially relevant in the context of the spread of the "delta" strain.
"We know that at shorter intervals we have a lower level of antibodies, lower efficiency. That is, we have no scientific reason to say that in the conditions of the spread of the ‘delta’ variant, a decrease in the interval will provide at least the same efficiency," he said.
"The position of the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group is not to shorten the intervals, but to use all the residues of the vaccines in the first dose," Lapiy emphasized.
