MP calls on govt to invigorate creation of 'green corridor' on borders with EU for Ukrainian agri exports
KYIV. Aug 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – MP Ivan Chaikivsky called on the government of Ukraine to increase bilateral cooperation with the governments of the EU countries to speed up the passage of grain carriers with Ukrainian agricultural products through border crossings in the western regions of the country.
He announced the corresponding appeal to the government at a meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Agrarian and Land Policy, of which he is a member.
According to Chaikivsky, Ukraine first of all needs a "green corridor" for exporting rapeseeds to the EU, since only 12% of its crop is processed in the country, and the rest is exported as seeds. Sales of rapeseeds before the Russian invasion provided Ukraine with stable foreign exchange earnings, but in wartime the storage of the crop is difficult due to the destruction of logistics routes and the lack of elevator capacity. In this regard, rapeseeds should be exported from Ukraine as soon as possible.
"Rapeseeds, which are a strategic raw material for the production of biofuel, can reduce the energy dependence of the EU countries on the aggressor country. In addition, the EU plan to overcome dependence on Russian resources and increase the share of renewable energy to 45% by 2030 provides for the active use of biofuel," he wrote.
Chaikivsky stressed that Ukraine felt the full support of European colleagues in the issue of increasing the export potential through the western borders, especially from Poland, which acted as one of the guarantors of obtaining reliable transit corridors for the export of Ukrainian agricultural products. Nevertheless, at the Ukraine-EU border crossings, there are still many kilometers of queues of vehicles, including those with agricultural products.
"Shorter travel time will significantly reduce the cost of logistics services, which, given the extremely low price of grain, will allow farmers to accumulate funds for winter sowing," the MP emphasized.
