Most Moldovan favor EU membership – poll

CHISINAU. Feb 27 (Interfax) – A majority of people in Moldova are prepared for their country’s joining the European Union, though they are aware this will take a lot of time, the director of IMAS, a pollster, Doru Petruti, said on Monday while presenting the findings of a Sociopolitical Barometer survey conducted for Public Media earlier this month.

The survey found that, if there were a referendum this Sunday, 51% citizens would vote for and 35% against EU membership; the rest were either undecided or said they would not go to the polls.

The respondents were aware it will be a long while before the country can join the bloc, Petruti said.

“According to the survey, 12% think this will take more than 20 years, 7% said, 11 to 20 years, 17% six to ten years, 14% three to five years, and only 6% [said this would take] a year or two, a majority of respondents, 29%, think Moldova will never join the EU,” Petruti told a press conference on Monday.

The presentation also included data on Moldovans’ attitudes to joining the Eurasian Union, NATO and Romania.

Thus, 38% said they would vote for and 39% against membership in the Eurasian Union. On Romania, 32% would vote for and 57% against Moldova becoming part thereof. On NATO membership, 24% would vote for and 62% against it.

The survey was conducted by interviewing 1,100 citizens on February 6-23.
