Moscow attack on Ukraine leads to biggest wave of refugees since Second World War – UN
KYIV. Jan 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine has resulted in the largest wave of refugees since the Second World War, the Radio Liberty said on its website, citing the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
"More than 7.9 million people have fled the country and another 5.9 million are displaced within Ukraine," UNHCR Representative in Germany Katharina Lumpp said.
The United Nations estimates that the total number of refugees at nearly 14 million is more than a third of the country’s total population of approximately 41 million.
Lumpp said Germany’s contribution of more than $500 million in support of refugees is second only to that of the United States.
