Moldovan FM speaks in favor of withdrawal of Russian troops from Transdniestria

STOCKHOLM. Dec 2 (Interfax) – Moldovan Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu has spoken in favor of the withdrawal of Russian troops from Transdniestria and turning the peacekeeping operation into a civilian mission.

He set out his position in a speech at a meeting of the OSCE Council of Foreign Ministers, which is underway in Stockholm on Thursday.

"The deployment of the so-called Operational Group of Russian Forces as well as ammunition depots in Moldovan territory has no legal basis and is at odds with international commitments and neutral status of Moldova. That is why we reiterate our readiness for dialogue in order to implement the initiative proposed by Russia two years ago regarding the disposal of munitions not subject to transportation," Popescu said.

"This will be an important step for the process of withdrawal of Russian troops and ammunition from Moldovan territory," he said.

"It is also necessary to keep on the agenda the issue of replacing the military peacekeeping mission with an international civilian mission under an international mandate. This issue is becoming more and more urgent," the foreign minister said.
