Moldovan Defense Ministry says no direct threats to national security

CHISINAU. Feb 25 (Interfax) – There are no direct threats to Moldovan security, the Moldovan Defense Ministry said, commenting on the Russian Defense Ministry’s statements on possible Ukrainian provocations in the Transdniestrian region.

“The Defense Ministry says that it is monitoring all events, actions and changes taking place in the region and in the territory controlled by the Tiraspol regime. We should note that there are no direct threats to the military security of the state now,” the Moldovan Defense Ministry said.

The ministry said that it “is cooperating with all other security agencies of the state to be able to prevent any attempt at destabilization, to preserve peace and stability in the country, and to ensure the security of citizens.”

“The National Army forces in the Joint Peacekeeping Forces in the Security Zone on the Dniester River are operating routinely. If possible threats to the security of the country are identified, the Defense Ministry will immediately inform the public opinion,” the statement said.

The Defense Ministry urged Moldovan citizens to “remain calm and receive information only from official sources.” “The disseminated false information is aimed at causing panic and confusion among the residents of both banks of the Dniester,” the ministry added.

“The flow of people and vehicles through the internal customs checkpoints has remained unchanged this week, the number of checkpoints has not changed, the staffs of the checkpoints have not been replenished or armed, the redeployment of troops and military hardware has not been recorded. There have been no violations of discipline among the peacekeepers,” the press service for the Moldovan Reintegration Bureau said.

The previous day, the Russian Defense Ministry said that Kiev had “intensified preparations for an invasion of the Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic.”
