Moldova receives EUR 36.4-mln grant from EU to support national budget

CHISINAU. Sept 29 (Interfax) – Moldova received a 36.4-million-euro grant from the European Union on Tuesday as direct support for the national budget, the Moldovan government press service said, citing a statement released by European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi.

According to statement, Varhelyi discussed the promotion of Moldova’s European agenda at a meeting with Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita in Brussels.

The EU will offer Moldova a pilot project to modernize rural economies across the country through the development of the agricultural and food industry, the creation of well-paid jobs, and the enhancement of village infrastructure so that citizens stop leaving the country, he said.

The 36.4-million-euro grant is part of Moldova’s economic recovery plan announced by the EU at the beginning of June. The plan, which envisages the allotment of about 600 million euros to Moldova, will be implemented within three years.

Gavrilita is paying a two-day visit to Brussels at the invitation of EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell.
