Moldova purchases 10 mcm of gas in case of termination of supplies from Gazprom and stores it in Ukraine

KYIV. Oct 21 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Moldavian state-owned company Energocom purchased ten million cubic meters of gas following the auction, according to a press release from Energocom.

The gas was purchased at a price of EUR 997 per 1,000 cubic meters. From whom the company bought gas, it is not reported. However, according to the company’s statement the gas will be stored in Ukraine and will be used in the event of a cessation of supplies from Gazprom.

Energocom held a tender within the joint project of Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) "Security of Gas Supply." Thus, Moldova took advantage of the credit line to diversify supplies. The auction was held according to the rules of the EBRD.

The Moldovan state-owned company said such auctions will be held in the future.

Currently, Moldova receives gas from Gazprom at a price of $1,031 per 1,000 cubic meters. Since October, Gazprom has reduced gas supplies to Moldova by 30%. According to the Transnistrian authorities, in November, gas supplies to the region may be reduced by 40%.

Every year Moldova (excluding Transnistria) consumes about 1.3 billion cubic meters of gas.
