Michel: By starting war against Ukraine, Russia returns nuclear threat to world
BRUSSELS. Sept 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of the European Council Charles Michel states that by unleashing a war against Ukraine, Russia has returned the nuclear threat to the world.
He said this on Friday in Brussels at a meeting with journalists. A few years ago we thought that we had moved away from nuclear risks, today, unfortunately, we are seeing that the war has returned to the European continent, this is a tragedy, and we see that the nuclear threat is again a serious threat, Michel believes.
In support of his opinion, the President of the European Council stated that what we are all observing are facts. Russia has nuclear weapons, which makes this war extremely dangerous not only for Europe, but for the world. Russian authorities have voiced threats related to nuclear weapons – you can check the statements before and even after the start of the war with Ukraine. This is the first point. And the second point, we are following very closely, as well as talking about what is happening in Zaporizhia. This is an extremely dangerous situation, Michel said.
In this regard, the European politician recalled that the EU supports the efforts of IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi aimed at finding a solution to reduce the level of risk around the nuclear power plant. "And when I speak with our partners, friends and allies, for example, in Japan, they are extremely nervous. There is Iran, there is North Korea and there is Russia and Zaporizhia. These are facts," the President of the European Council stressed.
