Meeting of Ukraine-NATO Commission starts in Brussels
BRUSSELS. Apr 4 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Commission has begun in Brussels, the agenda is to support Ukraine in its opposition to Russian aggression, as well as approaching membership in the alliance.
Opening the meeting, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed Finland as a full-fledged member of the alliance, which was met with prolonged applause by those present.
The Secretary General of the alliance, noting that the Ukrainian people continue to defend their country from Russian aggression, assured that the allies will continue to provide their support “for as long as it takes.” “Today’s meeting is an important milestone on the road to the Vilnius Summit. We will discuss what more we can do to ensure Ukraine wins and prevail [in war with Russia] as a sovereign, independent nation in Europe,” he said.
In this regard, Stoltenberg stated that NATO allies are already providing significant support, “but more is urgently needed.” “We need to deliver on our pledges of training and new heavy weaponry, and continue to ramp up production of weapons and ammunition. We will also discuss strengthening our political and practical support to Ukraine, as well as reforms Ukraine is undertaking to fight corruption, strengthen the rule of law and to protect minority rights. Ukraine’s future is the Euro-Atlantic family, and we will continue to work towards that goal,” the Secretary General said.
As it is known, this is the first meeting since 2017, when Hungary consistently blocked the Commission at a level higher than the level of the ambassador.
