Lukashenko sees steps to escalate migrant crisis as attempt to draw Russia into this process

MINSK. Nov 15 (Interfax) – Tensions are deliberately being stoked over the migrant camp on the border between Belarus and Poland, including in an attempt to draw Russia into this dispute, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.

"It is clear that tensions are being heightened on the border, and the aim of all this is also clear. All of us realize it perfectly. It is no accident that they are writing it in one sentence separated by commas: ‘Lukashenko is to blame,’ then [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, then ‘Belarus is to blame,’ and then ‘Russia is to blame.’ It is clear that the goal is to escalate tensions," the Belarusian presidential press service quoted Lukashenko as saying at a meeting in Minsk on Monday.

The Belarusian authorities have arranged for the migrant camp on the border to be guarded, he said.

"We have to guard it in order to ensure that no weapons are smuggled into it. I have said it many times, but these reproaches are continuing," Lukashenko said.

"We do not want these poor people to walk around Minsk or Grodno and cause discomfort to our people, especially on the state border, where our border guards have been put on alert," he said.

The president also mentioned the latest developments in the Black Sea, adding that he has discussed this issue with Putin.

"Look at what is happening in the Black Sea. The Russian president and I spent a long time yesterday discussing this matter. The behavior of the Americans and of other NATO members in the Black Sea is repulsive. They are stoking tensions there on purpose. But we are wise enough not to fall for these weird gestures of theirs," Lukashenko said.
