Lukashenko says U.S. opening bases in Ukraine

KYIV. Sept 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, whom the EU and the United States do not recognize as legally elected, at a meeting with the security bloc in Minsk on Monday said that Belarus and Russia are concerned over the situation on the border with Ukraine.

"We give particular attention to the Ukrainian sector and our actions there. As you can see, NATO troops are being pulled into Ukraine. They are de facto opening bases under the guise of training centers. The United States is opening bases in Ukraine. Obviously, we need to respond to that," the presidential press service quoted Lukashenko as saying.

Lukashenko said he had repeatedly discussed the issue at meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The Russian president and I have held consultations on the issue, and we continue to do so. We have also agreed that we need to do something or else a situation unacceptable to us will rapidly emerge on the border of Belarus and Russia, up to the deployment of missiles with the relevant operating range. We did not sign up for that and we cannot allow that to happen," he said.
