Lukashenko counts on UAE's help in resolving refugee crisis on Belarus' border with EU

MINSK. Nov 16 (Interfax) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) stands ready to join efforts to resolve the refugee situation on the border between Belarus and European Union countries, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said.

"I want to underscore one more thing: there are many kind people who are ready to make a significant contribution to settling the refugee situation, and not only on the border of Belarus, Poland, Latvia, and Lithuania, but first and foremost here and then in other places. I’d list the United Arab Emirates among them. The leadership of this country has a vast record of working with refugees. They have already helped find a solution to similar issues worldwide and have worked with refugees," Lukashenko said at a conference on the border situation held in Minsk on Tuesday.

Belarus and the UAE are in touch all the time, and there is an understanding that the UAE is ready to help settle the refugee crisis on the border, the Belarusian state-run news agency BelTA quoted Lukashenko as saying at the conference.

"I want to say once again that today we stand ready to make use of any event, any movement and any assistance provided by any state, especially by a friendly state such as the United Arab Emirates," he said.

Lukashenko said that he plans to discuss it with the UAE leadership soon.

"Moreover, it is a Muslim population. They have good mutual understanding between countries and between peoples. I think that the UAE could play a significant role here," the president said.
