Lithuania denounces treaty on border cooperation with Belarus

VILNIUS. Jan 18 (Interfax/BNS) – The Lithuanian government decided on Wednesday to denounce a treaty on the principles of cross-border cooperation, which was signed with Belarus 17 years ago.

"Will there be any remarks for denouncing something that is not in effect?" Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said at a government meeting.

Since there were no remarks, the proposal was approved unanimously.

The procedure was initiated by the Lithuanian Interior Ministry, which said that in the current geopolitical situation, the implementation of the treaty was impossible and would not be possible in the near future.

The agreement, which was signed by the governments of Lithuania and Belarus in 2006 and which identified the areas of cross-border cooperation, will no longer be in effect. In accordance with this document, the two countries agreed to cooperate on infrastructure, environmental protection, efficient use of energy resources, tourism, recreation, sports, cultural heritage, education, business infrastructure, traffic of vehicles and passengers across the border.

Lithuania and Belarus also agreed to exchange information and provide assistance at the border in case of natural or man-made emergencies. This agreement also covers cooperation in European regions.

Following the 2020 presidential election in Belarus, the outcome of which is not recognized by the West, the Lithuanian government made a protocol decision to suspend payments to Belarusian partners involved in joint projects.
