Lindsay and Cargill want to participate in implementing Ukrainian irrigation reform – Leschenko

KYIV. Sept 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The large international agricultural companies Cargill and Lindsay have confirmed their desire to assist in the implementation of irrigation reform in Ukraine, as they see this project as a long-term strategic perspective.

Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Roman Leschenko wrote about the results of a meeting of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and members of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine with representatives of American business on Telegram.

"The meeting was attended by the agricultural giant companies. They distinguished themselves by global investment in the agricultural sector. Cargill, for example, invested in the construction of the largest port infrastructure – Pivdenny port. It was pleasant to hear from such large-scale companies positive feedback on the successful implementation (in Ukraine) of land reform, an increase in productivity in the agro-industrial complex, as well as on effective VAT refunds in an automatic mode," he wrote.

As reported with reference to Leschenko in a June interview with Interfax-Ukraine, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy is negotiating with companies from Israel, the United States, France and China regarding public-private cooperation in the reconstruction of irrigation systems in the southern regions of Ukraine.

In April 2021, the Cabinet of Ministers called for the restoration of irrigation systems for agricultural lands in the southern regions of the country by the end of this year.

The restoration of the reclamation industry has become a national project until 2024. In 2021, the ministry launches a pilot project to restore irrigation systems in Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv and Zaporizhia regions.

By resolution No. 539 of May 24, 2021, the government transferred the management of reclamation systems to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy. This function will be performed by the State Agency for Land Reclamation and Fisheries, which is part of the ministry’s structure.
