Kyiv considers Hungarian FM’s statement about policy of violating rights of national minorities in Ukraine as far-fetched

KYIV. Jan 28 (Interfax-Ukraine) – A statement made by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto about the existence of a policy of violation of the rights of national minorities in Ukraine is far-fetched and politicized judgments, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleh Nikolenko said.

“We categorically reject the statement of Hungarian Foreign Minister Szijjarto about the existence of a policy of violation of the rights of national minorities in Ukraine. These are far-fetched and politicized judgments,” Nikolenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Friday.

He stressed that, on the contrary, Ukraine embodies an open policy of creating broader opportunities for self-realization of national communities.

“There are no threats to their national identity. We highly appreciate the ethnic and national diversity of Ukrainian society,” Nikolenko explained.

He added that moreover, over the past years, the Ukrainian authorities have demonstrated maximum openness to dialogue on the issue of national communities, in particular Hungarian, through a frank and constructive dialogue with Hungary at various levels. The spokesperson recalled that on the initiative of the Ukrainian side, a joint working group on education was established in February 2021, within which effective and efficient cooperation takes place.

“Currently, there are no reasonable grounds to accuse Ukraine of violating the rights of national minorities, and even more so to block the cooperation of our state with NATO, especially against the background of Russia’s aggressive actions. Without security in Ukraine, there will be no security either in Hungary or in Europe as a whole. Only together we can strengthen security in the Central European region,” Nikolenko said.

Earlier, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said that if Ukrainians do not retreat from the policy of violating the rights of the Hungarian minority, “this will seriously limit the ability of the Hungarian government to provide any support to Ukraine, including in the event of a conflict.”
