Kuleba instructs relevant diplomatic service to focus on protecting interests of Ukrainians in Kazakhstan – MFA
KYIV. Jan 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba instructed the relevant divisions of the diplomatic service to focus on protecting the interests of Ukrainian citizens in Kazakhstan, Spokesperson for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleh Nikolenko has said.
"We are closely following the development of events in Kazakhstan. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba instructed the relevant divisions of the diplomatic service to focus on protecting the interests of Ukrainian citizens in Kazakhstan. Now the key priority is their safety," Nikolenko told Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday.
According to him, the Ukrainian Embassy in Nur-Sultan has switched to a round-the-clock operation. In case of a threat to life or safety, Ukrainians may contact for help by phone: +7 (705) 755 6610 or by e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org.
"The situation is complicated by the introduction of a state of emergency in Kazakhstan, unstable work of mobile communications and the Internet. The movement of regional passenger transport is partially limited, international flights are significantly delayed or canceled," the spokesperson said.
He said that on Wednesday evening, a group of Ukrainian citizens were unable to take the Almaty-Kyiv flight due to the suspension of the airport.
"The diplomats helped the Ukrainians with finding places to spend the night. At present, the embassy is investigating with the airport administration and the airline the possibility of operating this flight, keeping in touch with passengers. According to the Foreign Ministry, Nur-Sultan airport is operating normally. Today, a flight to Kyiv is scheduled," Nikolenko said.
He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expects the Kazakh authorities to strictly ensure the safety of Ukrainian citizens, to provide them with full assistance, including those Ukrainians who prefer to leave the territory of Kazakhstan.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also calls on the citizens of Ukraine to avoid places of public events, primarily in large cities, to exercise increased vigilance and caution, as well as to register in the electronic system "Friend" (https://friend.mfa.gov.ua) so that diplomats can provide help in time.
"I want to reassure everyone that the Ukrainian state will not leave its citizens to their fate," the Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson said.
Nikolenko said that further steps by the Foreign Ministry and other departments to protect the interests of Ukrainians in Kazakhstan will be adjusted depending on the development of the security situation.
