Kuleba in New York urges to strengthen sanctions against Russia for pseudo-referendum in occupied territories – MFA

KYIV. Sept 21 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, during his visit to New York, called for strengthening sanctions against the Russian Federation for its intention to hold a pseudo-referendum in the occupied territories, the press service of the Foreign Ministry reported.

"Dmytro Kuleba raised the issue of strengthening international sanctions against the Russian Federation for its crimes against Ukraine, in particular in the context of Moscow’s intentions to hold pseudo-referendums in the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. The minister stressed the importance of closing loopholes that Russia can use to circumvent sanctions," the message says.

It is noted that during his visit to New York, Kuleba took part in the ministerial meeting of GUAM (an international organization that includes Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova), at which he informed the foreign ministers of Georgia, Moldova and Azerbaijan about the situation in war zones, and the efforts of Ukraine and partners to liberate the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories. The Ukrainian minister also thanked Georgia, Azerbaijan and Moldova for providing humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

"Dmytro Kuleba also told his colleagues in detail about the concept of the Kyiv Security Compact, developed by the Yermak-Rasmussen expert group," the press service of the Foreign Ministry noted.

The ministers also discussed strengthening the role of GUAM in countering challenges and threats in the region, steps to strengthen cooperation within GUAM, in particular in the areas of trade, energy and transport infrastructure development.

At the same time, Kuleba invited Georgia, Azerbaijan and Moldova to join the renewal of the Ukrainian regions that suffered as a result of the Russian war against Ukraine.

"Following the meeting, the foreign ministers signed the Consular Convention providing for the mutual provision of consular assistance to citizens, as well as the protocol for determining the country of origin of goods, which will allow the creation of a free trade zone between the GUAM countries," the ministry’s press service concluded.
