Kuleba discusses with foreign colleagues commitment to achieve justice in case of MH17 flight downed by Russia

KYIV. Sept 22 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, as well as the foreign ministers of Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, and the Netherlands held a meeting to discuss their commitment to achieving justice in the case of the Boeing 777 downed by Russia.

"While in New York, I met with my counterparts from Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and the Netherlands to reaffirm our shared commitment to achieving justice for the 298 victims of Russia’s downing of Flight MH17. Those responsible for this heinous crime must be held to account," Kuleba said on Twitter on Wednesday evening.

Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 flying MH17 Amsterdam (the Netherlands) – Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) was shot down in the sky over Donetsk region on July 17, 2014. All 298 people on board died. The cause of the disaster is being investigated by the International Investigation Team, which includes representatives of law enforcement agencies from Ukraine, the Netherlands, Belgium, Australia and Malaysia.

In September 2016, the group published conclusions that the liner was shot down by a missile launched from the Buk surface-to-air missile, and later it announced that Buk belonged to Russia’s 53rd Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade stationed in Kursk.

The MH17 trial began on March 9, 2020. In May 2022, presiding judge Hendrick Steinhaus announced that the public stage of the MH17 trial would be completed on June 10, after which the panel of judges would go to the closed stage to make a decision. The verdict will be announced in November or December 2022.
