Kernes Bloc – Successful Kharkiv nominates city council secretary Terekhov to post of mayor

KYIV. Sept 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Kharkiv city organization of the Kernes Bloc – Successful Kharkiv party nominated secretary of the city council, acting mayor Ihor Terekhov as a candidate for the position of mayor at a conference on Saturday.

"Ihor Oleksandrovych, I think that Hennadiy Adolfovych [Kernes] wanted this. It’s time to get rid of the prefix acting. Move forward. We will support you," son of deceased Kharkiv mayor Hennadiy Kernes, Kyrylo, said speaking at the conference.

The conference participants supported Terekhov’s candidacy unanimously.

Ihor Terekhov (born 1967) since September 2015 was first deputy mayor of Kharkiv Hennady Kernes. Prior to that (from April 2007) he was deputy head of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, and then (from April 2019) – deputy mayor of Kharkiv.

On December 9, 2020, Terekhov was elected secretary of the Kharkiv City Council.

On December 16, 2020, Kernes died at the German Charite clinic.

As is known, according to the current legislation, the secretary of the city council exercises the powers of the mayor in case of early termination or inability of the mayor to fulfill his powers.

On March 30, 2021, the Verkhovna Rada appointed an early election of mayor of Kharkiv for October 31, 2021.
