Kazakhstan to build 1 GW of renewable energy facilities by late 2024
ALMATY. Oct 28 (Interfax) – The Kazakh Energy Ministry, Samruk-Kazyna JSC, KazMunayGas JSC and Total Eren S.A have signed a memorandum of understanding for the implementation of a renewable energy facilities construction project with a total capacity of 1 GW, the press office of the Energy Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The project will be implemented in stages.
"At the first stage, the project capacity will be 200 MW with appropriate infrastructure for electricity storage. The project full completion is planned for the end of 2024," the statement says.
Total Eren S.A will work on attracting funds from international financial institutions for the project implementation.
Reports have said Kazakhstan plans in the next four years to commission renewable energy projects costing nearly $2.5 billion with capacity of over 2 GW.
In accordance with the approved concept for Kazakhstan’s transition to green economy the share of renewable energy sources should reach at least 15% of total electricity generation by 2030 and 50% by 2050.
In 2020, the share of renewable energy generation amounted to 3% or 3.2 billion kWh out of 108 billion kWh of total generated electricity.
In January-September 2021 renewable energy generation in Kazakhstan amounted to 3.237 billion kWh. In particular, wind farms generated 1.183 billion kWh, small hydroelectric power plants – 671.8 million kWh, solar power plants – 1.379 billion kWh and bioelectric power plants – 2.6 million kWh.
In 2021 it is planned to implement 23 projects in Kazakhstan with a total capacity of 381.1 MW and attract nearly $ 370 million in investments, according to the Energy Ministry.
Currently 124 renewable energy facilities with a total capacity of 1,922 MW operate in Kazakhstan.
