Kazakhstan negotiating oil transportation through Azerbaijan – KMG

NUR-SULTAN. Aug 25 (Interfax) – Kazakhstan is negotiating the transportation of oil through Azerbaijan, KazMunayGas Deputy CEO for Economics and Finance Dauren Karabayev said.

"The talks with Azerbaijan on oil transportation are underway both at the state level and at the level of national companies. Details still need to be worked out," Karabayev told a briefing on Thursday.

KazMunayGas said that Azerbaijan has two oil pipelines: Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan and Baku-Supsa, which can potentially be used for pumping Kazakh oil.

Kazakh Energy Minister Bolat Akchulakov denied media reports suggesting that Kazakhstan was planning to transport 1.5 million tonnes of oil via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline this fall. The minister noted that such talks could be held at the level of national companies, but such agreements should "be definitely coordinated with the Energy Ministry."

Reuters has earlier reported that Kazakhstan may start transporting 1.5 million tonnes of oil annually through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline from September. According to the news agency, KazMunayGas and State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) may sign the contract at the end of August, while another 3.5 million tonnes per year of Kazakh crude could start flowing in 2023 through another Azerbaijani pipeline to Georgia’s Black Sea port of Supsa.
