Kazakhstan intends to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 – Tokayev

NUR-SULTAN. Sept 23 (Interfax) – Kazakhstan is launching a national low-carbon development strategy in order to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said during the general debate of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.

"As a large landlocked country, Kazakhstan’s climate is warming more quickly than the global average, and it is threatening our population and economy. The median annual temperature has increased 2°C in the last 75 years, with serious droughts striking now twice every five years. In response, Kazakhstan intends to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060," Tokayev said.

Next month, Kazakhstan is launching a national 2050 low-carbon-development strategy in order to reduce GDP energy intensity by 50% from 2008 levels, Tokayev added
