Justice Ministry of Georgia denies Denisova meeting with Saakashvili, referring to Code on imprisonment

KYIV. Nov 16 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Ukrainian Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights Liudmyla Denisova said that she received a response from the Ministry of Justice of Georgia, in which the refusal to grant permission to visit the imprisoned Head of the Executive Committee of the National Council of Reforms of Ukraine Mikheil Saakashvili is justified by his state of health and Georgian legislation.

"The ministry said that given the state of health of Saakashvili, who continues to refuse to receive vital medical services, as well as the obligations of the penitentiary to ensure his health and safety, only those visitors are allowed into it, which are provided for by the Code of Georgia on imprisonment," Denisova said in Telegram on Tuesday.

She said that she still had not received a response to her request to meet with the head of the penitentiary facility No.18 and the head physician of the prison’s medical institution, which she had submitted four hours ago.

Saakashvili handed Denisova a handwritten letter through the attorney, in which he said that "for the last three days he has practically not got out of bed, the pressure is constantly jumping." "In my ward there is not only equipment, but also a call to call [a doctor]. The institution where I was placed is not a hospital. The council created by them was no longer admitted [into the ward]," according to the letter, which Denisova also published in Telegram.
