JCC develops new shortened route for Black Sea Grain Initiative

KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Since August 26, the Joint Coordinating Centre (JCC) in Istanbul has announced a new shipping route under the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which will reduce the transit time along the maritime humanitarian corridor.

"The Joint Coordination Centre announced today a new route for merchant vessels going in and departing from the three Ukrainian ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, Pivdenny/Yuzhny under the Black Sea Grain Initiative. The new route is 320 nautical miles long and connects the three Ukrainian ports with the inspection areas inside Turkish territorial waters," the JCC said in a statement published on Thursday on the website of the UN country team in Turkey.

The Maritime Humanitarian Corridor, which is part of this route, runs from the border of Ukrainian territorial waters to a southern waypoint and comes into force on August 26, 2022.

"This route has been adjusted following an initial three weeks of operations. It allows for shorter transit in the maritime humanitarian corridor and easier planning for the shipping industry," the report said.

The new coordinates were distributed through the international navigation system NAVTEX.

The route provides that while transiting the maritime humanitarian corridor, no military ship, aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicle may approach within a radius of 10 nautical miles of any vessel engaged in the Initiative and transiting the corridor.

The JCC’s procedures state that any commercial vessel encountering provocations or threats while transiting the corridor should report immediately to the JCC.
