Italy to provide EUR 2 mln to Ukraine for humanitarian mine clearance – FM

KYIV. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Italy will assist Ukraine in post-war reconstruction, including with humanitarian demining of territories, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio said during a meeting with Ukrainian Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky on Friday.

"Starting today, Italy will be able to join Ukraine’s reconstruction projects both at the highest state level and at local levels. As part of this project, we decided to provide EUR 2 million, which will be used for humanitarian demining," Di Maio said.

According to the Department of Communication of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the head of the Italian Foreign Ministry announced the signing of an agreement with the Italian city councils. "Many Italian cities and towns have signed memorandums of cooperation with Ukrainian cities. This is a brotherhood between cities that was born either before the war or during it. And we want to use this channel in order to work towards the renewal of Ukraine," he said.

Di Maio also clarified that Italy will be able to transfer some of the equipment for mine clearance to Ukrainian rescuers in the near future.

In addition, the parties discussed speeding up the ratification of the intergovernmental Agreement on Ukrainian-Italian police cooperation signed in 2021 last year.
