Internet from StarLink may appear in Intercity trains – MP
KYIV. Aug 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) – In the near future, StarLink satellite terminals for providing Internet access services may appear on high-speed trains of the Intercity category, said Oleksandr Fediyenko, the Deputy Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Digital Transformation (the Servant of the People faction).
"Something will need to be finalized by engineers for the integration of satellite dishes on the roof of the train, but these are already technical solutions. I draw your attention to the fact that the implementation of this solution no longer requires terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure along the railway tracks," he wrote on Telegram.
According to Fediyenko, a couple of years ago, the technical implementation of such solutions was impossible.
"And the solutions that previously worked on these trains, accepting CDMA networks, did not meet any quality parameters for accessing the Internet, and, in my opinion, were needed to launder money," he stressed.
As reported, in November 2020, the mobile operator Vodafone Ukraine launched a pilot project to cover the railway network from Boryspil International Airport to Kyiv and calculated a case for launching a full-fledged coverage of the entire railway.
According to Olha Ustynova, the general director of Vodafone Ukraine, mobile coverage of railways is unprofitable for operators.
