In Odesa, Zelensky announces development of program to revive Ukraine's research fleet

KYIV. Oct 29 (Interfax-Ukraine) – President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine plans to develop a major program to revive the research fleet of Ukraine, which will include the construction of 36 ships.

According to the presidential press service, the president made a statement during a working trip to Odesa region, where Zelensky examined the Noosphere research icebreaker, which will provide logistics for the Ukrainian Antarctic Akademik Vernadsky station, acquired for budget funds.

The President’s Office said this icebreaker was previously part of the British Antarctic mission called James Clark Ross.

"This year, the ship was sold to the National Antarctic Scientific Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. On October 5, 2021, the icebreaker entered the water area of Odesa port. Odesa was designated as its home port," the office said.

While on board the icebreaker, Zelensky examined the scientific laboratory, the wardroom and the control center.

"Director of the National Antarctic Scientific Center of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Yevhen Dyky demonstrated to the head of state the oceanographic equipment used on the ship for the purpose of scientific research," the President’s Office said.

It is specified that the icebreaker is equipped with eight specialized laboratories and devices for taking any samples from a depth of up to eight kilometers.

"Now Ukrainian researchers will have access to almost 90% of the seabed of the World Ocean. The presence of such a vessel, adapted to work in low temperatures, can significantly expand the range of scientific research," the press service said.

The head of state also said that the major program will soon be developed to revive the research fleet of Ukraine, which will include the construction of 36 ships.

"Today the beginning of this program related to shipping was just presented. There are many steps and many intentions. The main thing is that we are moving from words to concrete deeds," the president said.

He also examined the capabilities of the Borys Aleksandrov research vessel, which will be used to monitor the bottom of the Black Sea and collect environmental data.
