Importing electricity from Belarus to allow Energoatom to create capacity reserve in case of emergency situations – statement
KYIV. Oct 29 (Energy Reform) – National Nuclear Energy Generating Company Energoatom explained its participation in an auction on access to interstate sections for importing electricity from Belarus by the need to create a capacity reserve, taking into account the increasing load on nuclear power plants in conditions of fuel shortage among thermal generation companies and high prices for it in world markets.
"The presence of such an opportunity will allow creating a capacity reserve in case of emergency situations due to abnormal temperatures […], as well as avoiding a shortage of electricity in the domestic market," the company said on its website on Thursday.
At the same time, Energoatom announced plans to reserve small volumes of electricity from Belarus. This option is considered as one of a number of others for creating a reserve of electricity in accordance with the requirements of the operating mode of the Integrated Power System of Ukraine.
According to the press release, in the coming winter, the share of nuclear power generation will grow to 70% from 57% due to a decrease in the participation in the energy balance of thermal generation. At the same time, the company once again emphasized: for the first time in the history of Ukraine, at least 14 out of 15 existing NPP units will operate simultaneously.
At the auction of NPC Ukrenergo for distribution of the throughput capacity of interstate cross-sections on October 27, Energoatom bought out almost all the available cross-section capacity from Belarus to import electricity from this country in November – 885 MW out of the proposed 900 MW. The second winner of the auction – Electro Community LLC – secured a capacity of 15 MW.
A total of 16 companies participated in this auction, including Artleks-Energy LLC, Smartsol, Ovis Trade, Electro Ukraine, Smart Trade Energy, ONK-group, Electrotrading Group, Electro Partners, Zakhid Energo Zbyt, DE Trading, ERU Trading, New-Energy-Company, Pivden Energo Zbyt.
The price for using the section was UAH 601 per MWh.
Eight companies bought the available capacity for importing electricity from Russia in November in the amount of 2,200 MW.
At the same time, the capacity of the Ukraine-Russia section of 1,500 MW for the entire month, as well as 300 MW each for the first two and two last weeks of November, remained unredeemed.
