IMF says ready to increase assistance to Moldova in dealing with energy crisis – Moldovan presidential press service
CHISINAU. Dec 6 (Interfax) – Moldovan President Maia Sandu met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva during a visit to the United States to discuss Moldova’s energy problems, the Moldovan presidential press service said in a statement.
"Moldova is going through the severest energy crisis in its entire history, and it’s a goal of the authorities to help people and businesses deal with the high energy prices," the press service quoted Sandu as saying. Sandu noted "the need for programs to increase the resilience of the energy sector and to promote energy diversification."
In turn, Georgieva said that the IMF remains open to cooperation with Moldova and is ready to increase assistance in dealing with the current crisis.
Cooperation prospects were also addressed at the meeting, the press service said.
While in Washington, Sandu will have a series of meetings with U.S. officials and will attend the International Anti-Corruption Conference on the sidelines of the Summit for Democracy.
She met with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power and Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi on Monday.
"I underlined the importance of U.S. support for the strengthening of democracy in our country and the advancement of reforms, especially as we have become an EU candidate state. We also discussed the regional security risks and the impact of the energy crisis on our citizens and the national economy and said that the American partnership was necessary for the solution of these problems," Sandu said on a social network.
