IAEA head ready to continue consultations on safety zone around ZNPP this week
PARIS. Sept 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – IAEA chief Rafael Grossi is ready for further consultations this week with Russia and Ukraine on the creation of a nuclear safety zone around the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (NPP).
"Last week I had an opportunity to start consultations with Ukraine and Russia on the urgent establishment of a nuclear safety zone around ZNPP," Grossi said at a plenary session of the IAEA General Conference on Monday.
"And I am ready to continue these consultations in both countries this week," he said.
Earlier, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published a report on the results of the mission to ZNPP. It said, in particular, about the need to "immediately take intermediate measures to avoid a nuclear incident that could occur due to hostilities." "The issue can be resolved by immediately creating a safety zone," the authors pointed out. The IAEA expressed its readiness to immediately begin consultations on the urgent establishment of such a safety zone.
The Zaporizhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It has six VVER-1000 power units. The first was put into operation in December 1984, the sixth in October 1995.
Currently, Zaporizhia region of Ukraine is partially under the control of Russian invaders. ZNPP has been controlled by the Russian army since February 28, 2022.
