IAEA head announces plans to set permanent presence at ZNPP
PARIS. Aug 26 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, said on Friday about the possible establishment of a permanent presence of the agency at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant (NPP).
"On a technical level, we need to clearly define the characteristics of the mission and possibly establish a permanent agency presence on the ground," Grossi said in an interview with RFI.
The day before, the IAEA said that they expected to send a mission to the Zaporizhia NPP before September 5, which would include not only agency inspectors, but also security officers.
Earlier, Grossi, speaking via video link at the UN Security Council, called on Russia and Ukraine to allow the agency’s mission to the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant as soon as possible, and declared his readiness to lead it.
Grossi emphasized that only after personally inspecting the nuclear power plant, IAEA experts would be able to give the most accurate assessment of the state of the plant.
In addition, according to him, the presence of IAEA staff at the facility may have a stabilizing effect.
The Zaporizhia NPP is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. It has six VVER-1000 power units. The first power unit was put into operation in December 1984, and the sixth in October 1995.
