IAEA Director General to visit Ukrainian NPPs next week to establish presence of nuclear security experts there
KYIV. Jan 13 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi will travel to several nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Ukraine next week.
"Grossi will be in Ukraine next week to establish a continuous presence of nuclear safety and security experts at all the country’s nuclear power facilities," the IAEA said in a press release issued on Friday.
"The Director General will travel to Pivdennoukrainsk and Rivne NPPs as well as to the Chornobyl site to launch the missions consisting of two IAEA experts at each of the facilities," the IAEA said.
A two-member team will also be stationed at Khmelnytsky NPP in the coming days, it said.
The IAEA recalled that it already has a permanent presence of up to four experts at Ukraine’s largest NPP in Zaporizhia.
"We must continue to do everything we can to avert the danger of a serious nuclear accident," Grossi said.
The IAEA Director General will also meet next week senior Ukrainian government officials in the capital Kyiv on his proposal to set up a nuclear safety and security protection zone around Zaporizhia NPP.
