Holy Dormition Monastery monks not to transfer to Orthodox Church of Ukraine – Metropolitan Pavel

KYIV. March 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Vicegerent of the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, Metropolitan Pavel has said that the monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) will not transfer to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

“There were many statements from the Orthodox Church of Ukraine that allegedly more than half of the brethren want to join them. I am in constant communication [with the brethren], and, thank God, not a single person appeared to want this. Nobody agrees to join this structure,” Metropolitan Pavel said in a video message that was published on the website of the monastery.

He also denied accusations of illegal construction on the territory of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.

“This is a clear deception and a lie against the monks and the Church. Never in our lives have we started work without the permission of the Ministry of Culture and the permission of the reserve,” Metropolitan Pavel said.

In turn, Metropolitan Antony said that “information comes from all over the country that the believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will protect their shrines.”

He also said that on March 20, a holy synod of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church will be heldto make decisions on the situation with Lavra. Among other things, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church stated that they consider the statements of Culture and Information Policy Minister Oleksandr Tkachenko to be inconsistent and discrediting the Church.

As reported on March 10, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra National Reserve terminated a rental agreement with the Holy Dormition Monastery of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) from March 29, 2023. Metropolitan Pavel said that the monks of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) will not move out of the monastery.

Later, Tkachenko said that no one raises the issue of evicting the monks, and that the leadership of the Holy Dormition Monastery and the Ukrinian Orthodox Church itself should first leave Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. He also clarified that “the monks always have a choice,” referring to the transfer to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
