Head of UIA supervisory board Mayberg opposes nationalization of airline

KYIV. Dec 8 (Interfax-Ukraine) – Chairman of the supervisory board and co-owner of Ukraine International Airlines (UIA, Kyiv) Aron Mayberg speaks out against the nationalization of UIA.

"I read statements in the media that the owners of the airline are discussing this. No one has ever discussed this with me. I don’t understand this and I consider it a perversion. Nationalization cannot give success. The state will become a better manager than private business? I don’t believe," he said in an interview with Forbes Ukraine.

According to the co-owner of the airline, the option of nationalizing UIA was not seriously discussed between the shareholders of the company.

Mayberg also stressed that he considers nationalization to be a very bad scenario for the company, which, apart from lawsuits, will ultimately result in nothing.

He also stressed that over the past two years, revenue and the number of passengers carried by UIA more than halved, the fleet – from 41 to 24 aircraft, and the number of personnel – from 2,642 to 1,447 people.

The airline’s operating model has also changed from a networked airline to a hybrid one.

At the same time, Mayberg noted that the airline plans to complete 2021 without losses, the process of settling UIA’s debt to the state is underway.

"If the restructuring takes place, it will be positive for all parties … There is a group at the level of UIA employees, Boryspil Airport and UkSATSE under the coordination of the Ministry of Infrastructure. I am not participating," Mayberg noted, specifying that the airline has been paying for current obligations for a long time and stably.

At the same time, he stressed that the company needs financial support, specifying that financial support from the shareholders was carried out, but in insufficient volumes.
