Guterres to try to relieve tensions in Ukraine situation while visiting Lviv – UN

NEW YORK (UN). Aug 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will try to facilitate de-escalation in the situation in Ukraine during his visit to Lviv on Thursday, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, said on Wednesday.

"The issues that have been of concern regarding Ukraine. He is dealing with… overall effort towards what he can do to lower the temperature as much as possible. Those will be part of his discussions [during his visit to Ukraine]," Haq said at a press briefing on Wednesday.

Guterres will also discuss the operation of vessels departing Ukraine’s Black Sea ports, food and grain exports, and the situation at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary-general, had said earlier that Guterres would take part in a trilateral meeting together with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Lviv on Thursday.

On Friday, Guterres is to travel to Odesa and visit the local seaport, Dujarric said.

The UN also expects a bilateral meeting between Guterres and Zelensky, he said.
