Guarantees of Ukraine and Georgia’s non-admission to NATO imperative to Russia – Ryabkov

GENEVA. Jan 10 (Interfax) – Guarantees that Ukraine and Georgia will never be admitted to NATO are imperative and are a matter of national security for Russia, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said.

“The United States of America declares that neither Russia nor any other state should have any objections in this respect. But we underscore that it is critically important, highly important to us that Ukraine could not enter NATO at any point in the future. We would like NATO’s Madrid summit to revoke the formula that was adopted at the Bucharest summit in 2008. Neither Ukraine nor Georgia should become members of the alliance,” Ryabkov said at a press briefing after talks with the U.S.

“We need rock solid, legally binding obligations, not promises, but guarantees. The countries I have mentioned should not become NATO members. It is an issue of Russia’s national security,” he said.
