Govt proposes to Rada to introduce toll for trucks weighing over 12 tonnes

KYIV. Sept 23 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the bill proposing to set a toll for the use of public highways of state importance for vehicles with a gross weight of 12 tonnes or more, regardless of the country of registration.

"The logic of the project is quite simple: thousands of kilometers of roads in Ukraine are being built at the expense of taxpayers, that is, all Ukrainians. At the same time, thousands of kilometers of Ukrainian roads receive the greatest load and wear precisely because of trucks. Therefore, it is proposed to establish payment for the use of public roads for them. The funds from the trucks will be consolidated in the Road Fund and this will be an additional resource for creating high-quality infrastructure for all citizens," Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal said during a government meeting.

He also said that this initiative is part of the Ukraine-EU Association Agreement.

The Cabinet of Ministers also approved two related bills: on administrative offenses regarding establishing liability for violation of legislation requirements on fees for the use of public highways and on amendments to the Budget Code of Ukraine on fees for the use of public highways.

As reported, in December 2020, Ukravtodor said that the roads, renovated and built as part of the Big Construction, "will always be free."
