Germany to supply seven self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine – Defense Minister

KYIV. May 6 (Interfax-Ukraine) – German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, during her visit to Slovakia, confirmed the transfer of seven PzH 2000 (Panzerhaubitze 2000) self-propelled howitzers to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Deutsche Welle reported.

According to Lambrecht, the howitzers to be delivered to Ukraine are currently under repair and therefore are not on the balance sheet of the German army. She also clarified that the delivery would take place after Ukrainian servicemen undergo training in their use. The first group of 20 Ukrainian soldiers will begin training next week in Idar-Oberstein in Rhineland-Palatinate in cooperation with the Netherlands.

According to the Bundeswehr, with standard ammunition the Panzerhaubitze 2000 self-propelled howitzer can fire from a distance of 30 kilometers, and with increased range ammunition – 40 kilometers. Artillery crews can fire up to six shells so that they hit simultaneously. According to the Bundeswehr, the Panzerhaubitze 2000 is one of the most advanced artillery pieces in the world, with the advantage of accuracy and long range.

As previously reported, representatives of the Bundeswehr opposed deliveries of howitzers to Ukraine because only 40 of the 119 units available are ready for use and they need them themselves.

It was also reported that another five Panzerhaubitze 2000 will be supplied to Ukraine by the Netherlands.
