German Defense Minister does not consider it possible to transfer fighter jets to Ukraine
KYIV. Jan 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) – German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that, in his opinion, deliveries of fighter jets to Ukraine are impossible.
"I believe that this option is ruled out," he said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The minister said the fighter jets are much more sophisticated than the weapons system tanks, with different firepower and range, and warned against handing them over to Ukraine.
Earlier this week, Politico said, citing sources, that representatives of Western countries are discussing the possibility of transferring fighter jets to Ukraine. It is noted that the idea of supplying fighter jets is especially supported by the Baltic countries. However, according to Politico, this issue is likely to be "more contentious" than the tank situation.
Politico did not specify which aircraft models they might be talking about. However, the publication recalled that earlier Kyiv spoke of interest in the F-15 and F-16 fighters.
Prior to this, the German authorities decided to transfer the first batch of 14 Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. At the same time, the German authorities will give the allies permission to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine. Also last Wednesday, U.S. President Joe Biden announced a decision to send 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine.
