Georgian State Inspector's Service calls for protection of Saakashvili's health, honor and dignity

TBILISI. Nov 19 (Interfax) – The Georgian State Inspector’s Service has called on the relevant agencies to take all necessary measures to ensure protection of the health, life, honor, dignity and safety of imprisoned ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili.

A statement released on Friday by the service states that the State Inspector’s Service has no powers to transfer the prisoner from one penitentiary establishment to another establishment, including a medical establishment. However, the State Inspector’s Service issued a recommendation to the Justice Ministry on November 11, 2021 after a talk between a service official and Saakashvili, stating that the ex-president should be placed in such conditions where his health, honor, dignity and safety will be protected.

It was reported on November 9 that the Georgian State Inspector’s Service had started investigating possible inhumane and humiliating treatment of imprisoned Saakashvili. The service said in a statement Saakashvili would be questioned and his medical evaluation would be performed as part of the investigation.

The investigation has been launched based on reports from the office of the Georgian ombudsman, media reports and posts on social networks.

The inspection requested from the Georgian Penitentiary Service recordings from security cameras for November 8, showing Saakashvili’s transfer from the Rustavi prison to a prison hospital in Tbilisi.

The ex-president, who is implicated in several criminal cases in Georgia, secretly arrived in Georgia on September 29. He was detained in Tbilisi on October 1. He has described his detention as unlawful and the charges brought against him as falsified.
