Georgian police mobilizing ahead of 'grandiose' opposition protest

TBILISI. Nov 8 (Interfax) – The Georgian Interior Ministry has urged the population and opposition leaders to comply with the constitution, not to disturb the public peace, and to show respect for the professional activities of the police during the protest planned for Monday in Tbilisi.

"The police will be mobilized in the capital to provide security and to prevent an artificial escalation of tensions during the demonstration planned by opposition forces on Liberty Square in Tbilisi," the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry noted that the Georgian constitution allows demonstrations and rallies, but administrative buildings cannot be blocked.

Opposition leaders have pledged to hold a "grandiose" protest in downtown Tbilisi. "Tens of thousands of people will attend today’s demonstration. The demonstration of our supporters will not stop, it will continue until President Mikheil Saakashvili is transferred to a civilian clinic and early parliamentary elections are scheduled," Zaal Udumashvili, a leader of the opposition party United National Movement, told reporters on Monday.
