Georgian PM threatens Saakashvili with prison
TBILISI. Sept 28 (Interfax) – Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili would be arrested if he enters the country, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said.
"Once Saakashvili steps onto our soil, he’ll be arrested and put in prison," Garibashvili told journalists on Tuesday, in commenting on Saakashvili’s declared intention to arrive in Georgia on October 2.
"Saakashvili has been convicted in absentia, and he deserves prison," Garibashvili said.
"His hope that people would come out and protect him is false," he said.
"Our state is strong, and today is not 2003, when he came to power through chaos and destabilization. Any provocation would be curbed in line with the law," Garibashvili said.
Saakashvili said on social networks on Monday that he bought a ticket for a Kyiv-Tbilisi flight on October 2, when Georgia is to hold local elections. He called on his supporters to take to the streets after the polling stations close "to defend the victory achieved."
