Georgian parliament strips chair of opposition UNM party founded by Saakashvili of parliamentary powers

TBILISI. Oct 6 (Interfax) – At a plenary session on Tuesday, the Georgian parliament deprived leader of the largest opposition party United National Movement (UNM) Nikanor Melia of his parliamentary powers following his written statement filed in August of this year.

Earlier, Melia told reporters that he was leaving the parliament because during the electoral campaign the opposition forces focused their efforts on the local elections, which took place on October 2. The UNM nominated Melia as a candidate for Tbilisi mayor. Melia came in second in the recent elections. He will run in the second round of the Tbilisi mayoral elections on October 30.

As one of the leaders of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kadagishvili, said at the meeting, the issue of depriving Melia of his parliamentary powers is exclusively procedural and has nothing to do with politics.

Deputies from the UNM and other opposition parties did not take part in the voting.

Former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili founded the United National Movement party.

On October 1, he was detained in Georgia upon his illegal arrival in the country from Ukraine. He is currently in prison in the city of Rustavi.
